Reviews: The Great Jazz Trio: Collaboration

Performance:
In my opinion this is the weakest of the three discs I have by The Great Jazz Trio (See my other reviews here). To my mind the playing is too tame and at times even timid, especially on the first 5 tracks. The bass and drum solo's on 'Satin Doll' don't work I think. Frankly, they kill what should be a punchy and upbeat tune. 'Summertime' is played too slowly and with too much hesitation and white space. The bass solo's are simply destroying the melodic flow.

I cannot get into the overall mood of this disc somehow and I listened to it many times. The second part (tracks 6-10) is a little better than the first part as they seem to pick up the pace. This makes the group sound more engaged and enthusiastic than in the first 5 tracks. Whereas they slowed down 'Summertime' too much for my liking, the treatment Hank Jones gives 'My Funny Valentine' does work.

The sonic merits are undiminished and in-line with the other efforts on Eighty Eights.I am happy to have this JSA-CD, but not every disc can be an outright winner.

The Great Jazz trio JSA-CD's contain 10 songs each and there is some overlap to take into consideration, though all of the overlapping songs are alternative takes. The three titles below give you minimal overlap (4 out of 30 songs):
- Someday My Prince Will Come
- Collaboration
- Stella By Starlight

As JW points out this recording continues a fine tradition of superior quality recordings associated with the Eighty-Eight's label.
IMHO I actually prefer these alternative takes. In particular, I really enjoy Elvin Jones performance on this album.
