Reviews: Antonio Carlos Jobim: The Composer of Desafinado, Plays

I have my doubts about this music. Yeah, yeah, yeah....I know it's Jobim. But this is instrumental. And I am simply not sure I like orchestral jazz/bossa nova. I know it's sacrilige but I have visions of Mantovani when I listen to this recording. Beautiful melodies for sure. And there certainly is instrumental variety in the short 35 minutes of music assembled on this JSACD. I specifically waited with this review until I had several weeks of listening behind me. Sometimes your perspective changes. But in this case I remain ambivalent towards this rendition of Jobim's music.

Jobim plays minimalist piano (single-notes) and the acompanying flute, guitar, drums and massed string parts and bass clarinet play together to create his signature bossa nova sound. Stereo imaging is a little disjointed - all the massed strings are in the left speaker, some of the string section floats inside right and the flutes tends to float higher-up in the middle of the soundstage and also into the right speaker. Drums are split between left and right. The piano is very closely miked and fits unvariably in the middle - its sound lacks a certain clarity. The overall sound quality is good though with an analog feel to it.

Nice to own this SA-CD, but I do not think it will get a lot of spins here from now on.
