Performance:   Sonics:
These recordings originate from the 1960s and the performance of "Le Sacre", made when the composer was eighty, is generally regarding as the one by which all others are judged and is remarkable for its rhythmic drive, without any feeling of undue haste. There is sensitivity too in quieter moments like the Largo Introduction to Part II of the ballet. The 1945 revision is used for the performance of the "L'Oiseau de Feu" Suite and in both ballets, the playing of the Columbia Symphony Orchestra is marvellous. The DSD remastering has been superbly carried out and the stereo-only sound has remarkable clarity and spaciousness with the sense of a "real" orchestra being in front of the listener. Strongly recommended.

Much better sound here on Le Sacre, than on the previous , rather veiled, CD reissues of this
performance. And it's great to finally have this performance of the Firebird Suite available again
(originally on LP of course, previously only available on CD if you bought the giant Sony collected Stravinsky works CD box). This Firebird of all the ones I've heard has the 'right' rhythmic drive to my ears, during the Infernal Dance -- it just doesn't let up.
