Performance: Sonics: |
Once again Szell and the Cleveland work their magic, and the result is spirited and emotionally involving Schumann. I have just a small nit to pick with the performance of the Second Symphony's adagio, one of the most beautiful in the entire symphonic repertoire: I have heard it played slightly slower, which adds even more pathos to the already heart rending music. This is strictly a matter of personal taste; this performance has plenty going for it. The sound, however, is characteristic of older CBS recordings, and the upper strings sound somewhat harsh and lack air. This recording doesn't even come close to modern capabilities, but, if you can live with this slight sonic defect, the music itself is thoroughly rewarding.
