I have been an on and off fan of Spyro Gyra since their breakout album 'Morning Dance.' Quite frankly I lost interest in the late eighty's early ninthy's. Their sound became very identifiable and safe. I was also expanding my Jazz interests, rediscovering Miles, starting to really listen to 'Bitches Brew.'
When I discovered SACD a couple of years ago there still wasn't much of a selection of titles in Reno, so I bought almost any album that I could possibly have an interest. So now I have all three Spyro Gyra albums released on SACD. The first two are much the same as I remember, safe. Then I bought 'Deep End' and although Beckenstein is not trying to be another Parker or Coltrane, this album is breaking the Spyro Gyra safe format. I particularly liked the third cut 'Monsoon.'
This is well recorded and has a lush sound in Surround, this is one of the albums where 5.1 really excels. The 2-channel SACD stereo (headphones) isn't as exciting but still sounds great.

I have around 75 hi-rez multi-channel discs, and I would have to put THE DEEP END in the top 5 discs. Amazing sonics / mix, and for the most part, very engaging songs. I had only heard some SG songs on the radio, I didn't own any of their CD's previously. The xylophone used on a couple of songs is fabulous sounding as it floats around in the front stoundstage. #9's IN YOUR ARMS is a wonderful Kenny G style song that is absolutely gorgeous. #11 BEYOND THE RAIN gets a lot of playtime, as does #1 SUMMER FLING, #3 MONSOON, #5 JOBURG JAM and #6 THE CROSSING.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND this album.

This is one of my reference SACD's for demonstration.
Sonically it is near perfect.
Pay special attention to "monsoon" as it will convince everyone of surround superiority!
