Sometimes knowing too much can be a disadvantage. The reason I start my review like this is that people who's opinion on classical music I respect, say that Eshkenazy is playing off-key, or more accurately that there is something wrong with his intonation.
Now, it is because of this recently acquired knowledge that I find the first piece to sound terrible? The violin sounds thin and out of tune with its surroundings. I.e. the intonation is wrong, like more knowledgeable netizens intimated. And guess what? I now also hear it on the other tracks. The problem is that I never recall having had this response to this recording before. 'Blissful ignorance' I can hear many of you say !! The recording quality of the Pentatone releases is very good, so it's defenitely not that.
What I did find with this album was that I never 'bonded' with it. The music is somewhat superficial to these ears and it does not touch me emotionally. It's pleasant enough, but with all the classical recording available today, I would say that you don't need this one. I wish I could say this was because of the fact that the intonation was not right. That would make me a connoisseur wouldn't it ? But helas....
Try the other Pentatones first. We audiophiles are a strange bunch.

Very enjoyable and natural sonics. The solo violin and the orchestra sound pure and rich. Sounds like the mics have been very close and the atmosphere is intimate. Rear channels are used succesfully for ambience. Center channel has been used effectively and all three front channels are nicely in balance. MC mix is more surroundlike than discrete.
I'm not an expert on this kind of perfomance, but I enjoyed this disc a lot. All the three pieces here are fun to listen to.

An interesting disc. It includes 3 works, of which only the Mozart Violin cto. 5 is a widely known one. The other two, Scubert Rondo in A for violin and orchestra and Mendelssohn Concerto fr violin in d (composed when he was 13! ) are lesser known works that deserve to be widely appreciated by the record buying public.
Violinist Eschkenazy plays with an excellent technical command, if only a little bit anonimously, but indeed a fully developed performer with a lovely tone.
The Chamber Orchestra from the Concertgebow play with elegance and polish, being ideal for this repertiore, while Marco Boni, the conductor, keeps things together but lacks soem fantasy.
Pentatone sound is as usual excellent: detailed, with good ambiance, and getting the right sound for the solo violin, not an easy task to accomplish.
