It was a blasted chore obtainig this album on Hybrid SACD but it was well worth the effort However "Once Upon a Time" illustrates Simple Minds at the height of their popularity and creative powers, containing gems such as "All Ther Things She Said" and "Ghost Dancing". It is a Political album-left wing in it's outlook and diametrically opposed to my point of view BUT the music is excellent and the sound quality is simply awesome.I was surprised that "Don't You Forget About Me" was omitted (maybe something to do with that track being featured in the film The Breakfast Club, but that is the only foible in a near-perfect work.
Thoroughly recommended.

This review may not be a true comparison of the best format of this album. As you will see, I find the remix found in the DVD-A to be best format. The DVD-A and SACD use different masters.

I have both the SACD and the DVD-A of this recording as well as the original vinyl. I like every song on this album and I am a Simple Minds fan. I thought the SACD was an evolutionary step up from the original CD version. The upper mids are slightly clearer and the low end may have some better resolution on the SACD. I don't know if the hybrid redbook layer is a mixdown of the SACD layer or a transfer of the original. The red book layer of the hybrid is no better than the original CD.

However, upon listening to the DVD-A I don't think the SACD is the best format of this recording. I think the DVD-A was remixed from the original multi-track tape and this sound is so much cleaner. The vocals are clearer, the guitar and drum lines are much easier to transcribe and the bass track reveals some subtlies I was unaware of from the SACD.

I can't say for sure, but my listening of the Simply Vinyl re-issue indicates a CD master. The original vinyls pressing possess the best sound if the SACD is unavailable.

For comparison, I wish that Virgin would have used the new mixdown master used for the DVD-A to press the SACD. I would recommend that if you have a choice of the DVD-A and the SACD, I would recommend the DVD-A.

Hey Winston,

Are you able to rank the vinyl vs SACD vs DVD-A for us?

Are you saying in your review that the DVD-A is better than the original vinyl pressing?

Would appreciate your opinion - I have been keen on trying to get the SACD for some time.

Regards

Kilmainham
