Half the original Dire Straits (Withers, Knopfler) backing up a Bob Dylan who displays great vocal form. It proves to be a great mixture. The opening tune has an addictive lazy beat that sets the tune for the entire album. Knopfler is one of those guitar players with a very recognizable sound and sometimes his very contributions can turn another artist's work into a Dire Straits album. Not so here, though his infuence is cleary felt (and sought I venture) and I have to say it works extremely well. I guess it takes quit some doing to unseat Dylan :-) The album contains beautiful songs and has a consistent quality to it, that at times makes one long for an old fashioned blues rocker. Track 5 "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking" makes up for that a little. Dylan's new found faith apparently calmed the waters because on track 6 he is back to the mellow, flowing melodies that make up this album. The sound is very good though somewhat dry on the voice and acoustic guitar. What I find strange on these Dylan discs I own (3 so far) is the mix. Dylan's guitar is often heard in the left speaker and his voice in the middle which has a rather disjointed effect on the entire proceedings. The SA-CD loses half a star for that one. But Dylan's voice is so good here that you quickly forget all this audiophile analysis. Jw

Surely most coming to this SACD will be familiar with the music and controversy surrounding this, Dylan's first "Christian" outing, so I won't rehash the usual compliments and caveats. What is significant is of course that the sound quality on this, one of Dylan's best produced albums, has been improved. The CD version by comparison is laughable. While I have not listened to it on multi-channel, I can say that this is one of the more "audiophile" quality Dylan recordings available in stereo, and one of his more consistent efforts. So it is a must for Dylan fans who also happen to like quality production on the recordings they listen to... hmm, that's probably not too many people, come to think of it...
