Great recording of an exciting performance. Unfortunately, the soloists have the wrong vocal coloring for this music: think Mahler with the voices of Boris Godounov...
Still the performance is very entertaining and the choral singing and orchestral playing is first rate.

Warning... These are old stereo master tapes shanghaied into SACD surround. The performances are wonderful, as Count Basie is at the piano and the band is at its prime. Bad thing? The sound is great and that is the only good thing to say about this turkey.
The singer with this band is one of the worst big band singers I have EVER heard. She takes "Body and Soul" and turns it into a pitch salad of notes that are simply tasteless! Also, she tries to sing high notes that are ... more |

This is actually quite good, especially considering the age of the master tapes.
One big quibble, Fiedler had some ungodly rule against saxophones and the Gayaneh Sabre Dance has NO sax in it. Instead violas and cellos double each other in octaves. Also, the performances are the typical impersonal ... more |
