These performances have been around on Sony's Essential Classics series for a while - the sound on this stereo non-hybrid SACD is a clear improvement with little or no hiss and a wide dynamic range. No small achievement for recordings made in 1957. They certainly belie their age.

I have been comparing this (non-hybrid, stereo-only) Sony SACD with the old Sony/CBS CD set - the 2 discs Maestro series from 1990, I've never heard a more recent Essential Classics CD incarnation c/w some Ormandy Wagner. I suspect that was the same remastering.

'An extraordinary sonic experience' says DG, and right they are. Not sure how many organ multi-channel SACDs there are out there, but this is the first one I've heard.

I wasn't too confident that I would like Yundi Li's discs, as his model-like appearance and gushing booklet notes seemed to encapsulate what many feel is wrong with classical music these days: style without substance.

There is precious little Schumann piano music on SACD - but this is disappointing artistically. Pletnev is a master pianist, but this is probably his worst recording, although the sound per se is superb.
