Very much a disc of two halves - the Rite of Spring is well played but sounds really too comfortable compared to other fine versions by Markevitch, Boulez, Karajan, Muti and Inbal - among others. The sound too lacks impact with a low transfer level. This work really needs more aggression to come ... more |

I bought this SACD cheaply on eBay more or less blind, knowing only the pianist Cedric Tiberghien who has recorded successfully for Harmonia Mundi (Beethoven Variations and Debussy).

First of all, after discussions here about misleading SACD multichannel packaging, well done to Channel Classics for clearly marking this as a 5.0 SACD on the cover. So a centre channel but no subwoofer in use.

Superbly played and vivid realisation of a work which is not in fact one of my favourite Mahler symphonies - but if any recording could convert a listener it is this.

An excellent SACD - sonically the use of the rears is very discreet, just emphasising the clarity and warmth of the recording, although to be honest I didn't really notice the quality of the sound as the performances are so good.
