Having owned these on Odyssey LP, cassette and Sony Essential Classics (“SEC”) CD I have been looking for this SACD and finally got my hands on one. The performances, as Penguin used to write, are an orchestra reveling in their own virtuosity, and have never been bettered.

Having owned “Rhapsodies” on LP and Living Stereo CD, I was particularly disappointed in this recording. Yes, these are exciting performances. But, I don’t see much of a gain in SACD for this recording. The soundstage is very deep. So deep that clarity suffers because of “cathedral” reverberance. ... more |

I’ve owned these on LP and CD. The performances get raves from almost every reviewer. They are near perfect. Szell conducted 86 performances at the Met from 1942-1946, including 4 Ring Cycles in 1944 and 1945 (with Traubel and Melchior). He conducts with opera experience. I’ve owned these on LP and cassette. The virtuosity in Perpetuum Mobile alone is worth the price of the disc. Jaw-dropping virtuosity. These may not be quite as “Viennese” as others but they are played impeccably. And they are obviously having a dammed good time making these recordings.
