This is one of my top SACD reissues so far. Ultimately it is not a premium-grade recording but it is a great example of just how much the SACD process can do from an old master tape. I was rather disappointed with this reissue. Yes, the bass drum is louder and lower and the effects pan around wildly in surround but overall I found the whole thing to be completely disjointed and distracting. I concur with the previous reviews of this SACD. Absolutely superb. However, one note about the CD layer. It seems to sound inferior to the original CD issue I have. The overall volume is higher and there seems to be more distortion and less dynamic range. As well, there is a touch less harmonic ... more |

The mids and treble are far too hot on the CD layer of this recording (haven't listened to SACD yet). I've grown up with Sam Cooke and am very familiar with how all the tracks should sound. Check out the SAR Records story for a much better sounding version of his early tunes. Perhaps the SACD layer ... more |

As with other reviews, I should point out that I have not heard the SACD layer, just the CD layer. I'm waiting for a mid-priced music-only SACD player.
This disc comes close to the original vinyl. It definitely sounds more compressed and harsh, but overall it is an improvement on the previous RBCD ... more |
