Well, I thought I knew what Rachmaninov sounded like, and I thought I knew what liturgical choral music sounded like, but this disc has challenged those assumptions, and unfortunately I don't mean that as a compliment.

This is a great package: 2 SACDs including two complete alternatives of the 4th movement, plus a redbook CD containing an 80-minute talk by the conductor on the piece. All that for 16 bucks at BB.

A fine performance well recorded. My complaints have to do only with the size of the ensemble. The Netherlands Bach Society is apparently 20 instrumentalists playing period instruments and 20 vocalists. I miss the raw "punch" of massed voices singing the "Dies Irae," "Rex Tremendae" etc. And perhaps ... more |

I bought this double-disc recording for $15. It is without a doubt the best classical SACD I own; the sonics are clear yet deep, and the power of the low end makes my small speakers sound quite large indeed. Awesome. Stunning. |

Don't let the "PCM" source scare you. The booklet says the original recording was 96k/24-bit, and it sounds hi-rez all the way. The dynamics, especially in the pianissimo end of the scale, are amazing. The violin sounds warm and blends into the sonic landscape of the orchestra better than some other ... more |
