I agree with the two previous reviewers that this is great jazz. It is Burton's album, so we shouldn't be expecting Metheny's guitar to be front/center. This disk is a collection of organ pieces, all of which were composed after 1960. The music is very "modern", lacking obvious melody, harmony, or rhythm. This is a concert recording from Jan. 1, 2002, at the Musikverein (Goldener Saal) in Vienna. It consists mostly of Strauss dance music: waltzes, polkas, and marches. This SACD set was rated highly by HP in The Absolute Sound (issues #152 and 170). I find, however, that the recording is highly artificial. In particular, the microphones on solo instruments are much too close. You can even hear the breathing of the soloists when the full orchestra is also playing. ... more |
