Yes: Going For The One        (1 of 2 found this review helpful)

I have played this SACD solidly for two weeks hoping I would like it. sadly it is a disappointment. The sound just seems muffled and slightly compressed. Almost like someone threw a blanket over the speakers. I cannot believe with the dynamic range of SACDs that more detail and hertz range could not ... more
The Band: Northern Lights - Southern Cross        (2 of 3 found this review helpful)

The Band recorded this using a 24 track console, and added string instruments, synthesisers, loops etc. It was very high tech for them at the time. Sadly like most great bands I think they were past their peak and going through the motions when they recorded this album. You could use words like OK ... more
The Doobie Brothers: Takin' It To The Streets        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

I had never heard the entire album before I brought this SACD.Really only heard loud CD versions of the hits "Taking it to the Streets" and "Minute by Minute". What a great revelation it was hearing the entire album as it should sound. It is a wonderful fusion of funk/soul and jazz played by a great ... more
The Doobie Brothers: The Captain and Me        (1 of 1 found this review helpful)

I always enjoyed the cruisey sound of the Doobies. It harks back to a time where bands wrote their own songs and weren't afraid to experiment with different genres of music. Unlike today's " production line" pop music which is recorded on laptops. This album certainly has a lot of variety. Aside ... more
Genesis: Nursery Cryme        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

This album showcases all that was good and bad with "progressive rock" in the early 1970's. The album is a mixture of long, epic ballads like The Musical Box and shorter, harmonic songs like Harequin. Overall the longer songs become a bit tedious and by the time you hear "the Fountain of Samalicas", ... more

Hi, I read your fine reviews on earlier Warner Japan Sacd's. I get the impression these new Warner Sacd releases may be "glorified" DVD-A's" as they do not appear to be recorded from the original analogue source. There also appear to be issues with compression and overly bright sounds. Certainly they don't seem to match the quality of the MOFI ... more

I'm a bit confused about these new SACD's. Are these produced by Universal Japan?? or is a third party producing them. Also are these re-released SACD's or new products. ... more

Agree with you comments re MOFI. mixes. I think a lot of it comes down to the quality of original recording and the actual condition of the master tape. A lot of early albums by artists were done on fairly low budget's. Also I know cases where master tapes have simply worn out or detioriated. MOFI probably finds it easier to get the rights to ... more

Rolling Stones "stealth" SACD? How can I tell?

The thing to look for on the ABKCO digipack is "the original certificate sticker" on the front cover of the digipack. Alternatively see if you can open the packaging and it mentions the SACD inside. There seem to be a lot of copies of "Aftermath Uk", "Out of our heads" and "Between the Buttons" SACD's still for sale. The quality is varied and ... more
