Steely Dan: Aja      (2 of 13 found this review helpful)
  April 29, 2011

I’m not a Steely Dan fan. Don’t remember what inspired me to buy the DTS release of Gaucho – maybe because it was readily available, or cheap. But I liked it on first listen, and with continued listening learned to appreciate the complexity of the music on the album. Upgraded to SACD, and while not ... more
True Audiophile - The Best of Groove Note Vol. 2        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)

Load this disc and your multi-channel player will indicate two tracks. Two? Yes, tracks 4 and 11 are the only multi-channel tracks on the album. You must manually set your player to stereo to hear the entire album. Only disc I have with such a requirement. Otherwise, impressive sonics and the studio ... more
The Cal Tjader Quintet: Latin + Jazz = Cal Tjader        (1 of 4 found this review helpful)
  June 24, 2010

What an awful album. 8-( Track one is a prime example of a problem I have with Latin jazz in general – the music is often repetitious and feels like it doesn’t know when to quit. A basic phrase and reprise, repeated over and over, with an energetic percussion section banging away. At about five ... more
Beethoven: Overtures - Sir Colin Davis        (8 of 9 found this review helpful)
  April 22, 2010

I was pretty excited about this series, what with the mostly positive reviews and all. The Beethoven overtures are missing from ... more

After learning that this SACD had been dropped from MoFi's production, I chased it for months and months, back when Tower was still in business . . . finally decided to bite the bullet and paid about twice MSRP for it. Was it worth it? Sonic performance is not up there with the Pat Barber MoFi ... more

Geez! Thought this was a post about music. Like many of you I'm sure, I have a lot of 60s and 70s rock on LP. I seldom play these records - not from the inconvenience, but maybe because I'm tired of hearing this stuff! Some of it hasn't aged all that well, either. Nevertheless, I'm happy to see ANYTHING produced on a high-resolution format. If ... more
SACD PLAYBACK ERROR
September 17, 2010
Having trouble with some of my SACDs, to which one of you may have some advice. During the last track or two the player starts skipping, a second or so at first, then several seconds, then stops; the time indicator then shows 00:00:00. Preceding tracks will play, but the laser always skips and stops on the same tracks. I've checked the discs for ... more
