Pergolesi: Stabat Mater - Florilegium          (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  July 18, 2010

This is a welcome opportunity to hear something of the output of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736); yes, died at age 26 years. The feature piece is Stabat Mater (Latin for "The sorrowful mother") which is based on a 13th century text in the form of a meditation on the sufferings of Mary as she ... more
American Spectrum - Llewellyn        (6 of 6 found this review helpful)

What a rewarding and entertaining program this is, entertaining in the sense of exciting the senses and imagination while in no sense precluding the possibility of a more intellectual engagement with these compositions. We might expect modern American music to be parochially new world and bold, even ... more
Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 9 - Kreizberg          (7 of 9 found this review helpful)

I felt inspired to bring this disc to the fore once again. It is absolutely amazing. If you love Shostakovich or feel tempted to try his symphonies then I am compelled to recommend this disc to you. The 5th is most comprehensive and accessible, while the 9th is very entertaining. The coupling is ... more

What a delicious experience this set is. The music must rate with Handel's best, the performance is first class and the recording is of a very high standard. I find myself returning to these discs over and over for a refreshing and entertaining experience; I'm confident that any lover of baroque ... more

Discussion: Adams: Harmonielehre, Short Ride in a Fast Machine - Michael Tilson Thomas
February 8, 2012
The opening is rather bold because of the image that inspired the composition. "Adams has stated that the piece was inspired by a dream he had in which he was driving across the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge and saw an oil tanker on the surface of the water abruptly turn upright and take off like a Saturn V rocket."[Wikipedia]. I see the ... more
How many of you are - actually - SACD-ONLY buyers???
February 4, 2009
Hi Robert (of BIS fame). I address the question you asked in your original posting. I am an incurable audiophile and now purchase only SACDs. I know they too can be of variable quality so I scan the reviews before I purchase. But given the quality of my playback equipment and my quest for the best possible sound reprodustion I must now always look ... more
