bach cello suites, suzuki or lipkind?

I've been listening quite a lot to Lipkind both in stereo and in Mch, and for one thing I find the way he plays the cello to be in the very top league regardless of music or instrument of choice. As for the recorded sound it's as rich and detailed as his playing, and I don't miss any more "sense of room", certainly not in MCH, in stereo maybe, but ... more

Yes that's the one; and yes he is definitely under-represented. You've got the Stabat mater, which is fantastic music and good performance and recording too, but even that's only stereo, not really close to the full potential of SACD. ... more

My pick would be Boccherini: Guitar quintet with Rolf Lislevand and Les Concert des nations. Normally when the guitar is recorded together with other instruments in classical music I feel that its subtle nuances are either masked over or else the guitar is artificially lifted out of the ensemble by close miking it. As for classical hybrid SACDs, why would that be? Most people, including many reviewers, will listen to the CD-layer; I just can't see any reason why they would not be interested in making the CD sound as good as possible too. As for pop/rock it's a different story as some people seem to prefer compressed audio for this kind of music. ... more
