Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 - Haitink          (8 of 8 found this review helpful)

This is a review of the 2ch program only, and focuses mainly on the sound quality. Don't pre-judge this cycle by the other mainly-disappointing LSO Live recordings. With LSO Live we have come to expect overzealous spotlighting which results in flat two-dimensional sound due to everything sounding ... more

I must say I don't get all the 5-star reviews of the sonics. I have to agree with those who gave poor sonic reviews. The cannons actually clip; that's why there is no bass energy in them. They simply exceed the amplitude limits of the digital format, so all that is left is a weak click where there ... more

Firstly: who the heck is that one person out of 20 (at the time of writing) who voted NOT to recommend this remastered masterpiece?! Sheesh! I have to echo earlier sentiments. This album is SO well recorded and remastered. The energy of the performances push it almost into rock 'n roll territory. ... more

Cannonball Adderley Quintet: In San Francisco        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

The music here is not simply "straight-ahead hard bop" as suggested by Claude. This is mostly "soul jazz" - jazz with a heavy soul (and R 'n B) bent - although there are a couple of numbers played in the hard bop style as well. The band swings throughout and the solos from Cannonball show him to be ... more

Ah, but I was referring to the *Audio Fidelity* remasters, which use the original stereo masters (yes, in bad shape I guess). The Columbia Legacy issues, on the other hand, used the original multitrack SESSION TAPES, which were in great shape and were faithfully remixed by Vic Anesini, allowing greater clarity/resolution and improved reverb as ... more
Say NO to Simon & Garfunkel on Audio Fidelity's Gold CDs because...........

Whilst I generally LOVE most of the AF (and DCC) remasters for their warmth and luscious valve tones (which I know is a bit controversial in audiophile circles - many prefer the cleaner sound such as heard on XRCDs, etc) I have to say I am not a fan of the AF Sounds Of Silence CD compared to the Vic Anesini remixes. Anesini, to my ears, has been ... more
