Mahler: Symphony No. 7 - Zinman        (15 of 16 found this review helpful)
  August 6, 2011

ADHD Summary: Of the Zinman series, this is the closest to finding its way to the absolute top of the pack in both sound and performance. This is only my second 5/5 review for sound/performance. Admittedly, I have fewer examples (6) of this Mahler symphony than I do of the ten others , but Zinman's ... more
A Cappella Works by Copland, Duruflé, Vaughan Williams etc. - Mackenzie          (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  July 2, 2011

ADHD Summary:  Glorious in every way. Good music, well sung, fine recording, ridiculously cheap price. But you probably want some justification for this endorsement, which is why I have written the review. Back story:  I canvassed the SACD.net database for recordings that I own, have no reviews ... more
Wolf: Italian Songbook - Christoph Prégardien, Julia Kleiter        (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  May 3, 2011

ADHD Summary: Different from the alternatives for the /Italian Songbook/. A must for fans of Wolf, and a surprise to find this less recorded work recorded and performed so well. Prégardien is now at the top of his game, and his game is good. Kleiter has a bright future ahead.  Preface: This is ... more

ADHD Summary:  This disc is /not/ a collection of musical fluff, but it /is/ a recital of unusual disc mates. Excellent but reverberant recording. Well worth buying for the Walton piece alone, which is a joy to discover. Background: During the writing of the review of the Tokyo String Quartet's ... more

ADHD summary: Whether your first set or your fifth, these fine performances are ones that speak to an emotional intimacy with Beethoven's late period, and I have listened to each one repeatedly and joyously for the past week and a half. The sound is good, but a bit variable, in part because of ... more

My pleasure, Seth. One of the good things about writing the occasional review is that I get to sift through my discs and find a few that have not yet been talked about on our site. The Walton piece is boss. I hope you enjoy it. ... more

On that subject, I have a couple of Audite recordings with ~150 minutes on the SACD layer, although they seem to be demonstrating their remastering process rather than providing us with extra music. > I want to be sure no one thinks I was supporting the following statement, which although taken from the article cited above, equivalent statements ... more

Stanbury said: > -g-> Why should I care? I see no relationship whatever between the number of channels used to /make/ any recording, and my listening to it, at home, on my system. It's not like I am going to listen on my three channel headphones with all three ears. I'm sure I have listened to many recordings made with "16 or more" channels, and ... more

And it is unfortunate that many fans of legit music feel this way. Among my friends who are /not/ fans of legit music, Ma is the one active performer that each can name. I suspect the collective reaction among legit music fans is related to a growing awareness of the options. I have nine complete sets of the Bach Suites. It certainly is not true ... more
