I approached this SACD with caution for several reasons - firstly I had been disappointed with 2 Philips SACDs of live concerts; this one is happily not live. Any review following Castor's excellent dissertation would be superfluous unless it disagreed with any aspect. Mine doesn't. So why am I bothering? Sadly I have to concur with sgb's overall conclusions on this recording. I am a fan of Gergiev and can appreciate his view of the work, and the orchestra's excellence, but I feel that Philips has not done justice to either in a recording (in multi-channel or stereo) that fails to approach the best ... more

Firmware BDP83-40-0925 (apparently the latest) HDMI audio set to LPCM SACD output set to PCM My Sony STR-DA2400 ES will not decode DSD on HDMI so I cannot use it. The analogue outputs of the Oppo are audibly better than PCM via HDMI, and these exhibit low-level clicks, at track junctions on SACD only, so work still needs to be done to cure this ... more
