Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 - Haitink          (14 of 15 found this review helpful)
  December 4, 2006

I bought this box set very soon after its release, after reading three reviews of the individual releases here on SA-CD.net. The reviews stressed the nuance and attention to dynamics and dance-like quality that I had heard Haitink bring to a performance of Mahler's First at Tanglewood this summer. ... more
Smetana: Má vlast - Davis          (7 of 8 found this review helpful)

First Rate Ma Vlast on SACD This is an excellent performance of Smetana's six-movement tone poem, IMO the best available today on SACD. I'm really happy to have the complete work, rather than just "the Moldau". Sir Colin's conducting is lithe and dance-like where called for; appropriately dark and ... more
Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 9 & 25 - Brendel          (13 of 14 found this review helpful)

I am not a Mozart expert, so I'll leave most of the musical review to others. I'll give most of my comments to the sound. This CD impresses me as representing a really first class recording of an orchestra and piano, perhaps the best I own out of perhaps 50 classical SACDS. And it is coupled with ... more

When the disk opens, my room suddenly becomes electric with the subtle ambient cues ... more
Chopin: Polonaises - Pollini        (6 of 8 found this review helpful)

Deutsch Gramaphone is not noted for its lifelike engineering, but when it comes to SACD they are doing something right. Of the several DG's I've heard, none have been bad and most much better sounding than their stereo cd versions. Moreover, they seem to be going back to the master tapes and ... more

Those who have heard it and its sister CE595 five-disk changer think they sound every bit as good as Sony's earlier CD/SACD line, of which the CE775 has become something of a classic. I don't think you'll go wrong. Harry P.s. I have Sony's ES line CE222ES in my main system, and picked up a CE775 used recently...I can attest to its sound quality. ... more

The new RCA Living Presence series has the full version by Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra and several different choruses. Sonics are excellent...I don't have an appropriate frame of reference to evaluate the performance. ... more
