This is not only one of my favorite Davis albums but also own of the best live sacd's I own. The playing is loose and free but also very passionate.

I own the original Japanese sacd and it has always sounded amazing on my system and still does. Could the new Mofi sacd up the ante???

Back in the day Columbia/Sony would give the Japanese Techs a Dsd copy file of the original master tapes. From this they would create the sacd. Mofi used the original tapes for this release.

The original sacd has a very sweet sound and really showcases the live event. There is a transparency about the transfer that I just love. It has great energy and is simply a great listen from start to finish.

The new Mofi sacd transfer features a different sounding venture and one that unfortunately I don't really like. Mofi has a fantastic tape player that extracts a lot of hidden detail from the tape source. If there is more info to be had then Mofi will find it. And this is exactly the problem. At least to my ears.
In attaining more musical information the instruments have been rendered somewhat opaque for my tastes. Also a tad darker. There is less treble on this disc as opposed to the earlier sacd. While the new transfer definitely has more substance it also sounds drier and flatter. There also seems to be less air around the instruments and less headway above the live proceedings. Thus the increase in bonafide actual musical information makes for a less enjoyable listen.

In short Mofi has shown the limitations of the original recordings and I don't like it one bit. Of course its not their fault. The transfer is an honest one.

Having said that I much prefer the original Japanese sacd even if it has slightly less original tape information. I just don't like listening to the new Mofi version nearly as much as the former disc.

A good job by Mofi.

Recommended only if you cant find the original Japanese sacd.
