After the wonderful music on the Lyrinx set of the Mozart Quintets, I was eager to listen to another Lyrinx disc. So I decided to give this one a go. This disc may not quite have reached the heights of the Mozart set, but it's still fairly good. The First Concerto is done quite well. Both the Monte Carlo Orchestra and Jean Claude Pennetier play very well, and make for an enjoyable concert. The Third Concerto didn't fair quite as well to me. Jean Claude Pennetier's playing was excellent again, but the orchestra seemed a bit less. And if one reads the notes, they mention that the orchestra for the Third Concerto is smaller than the orchestra in the First concerto. I think I am used to a bigger orchestra and bigger orchestra sound of most other recordings. But this recording just didn't seem to have the drama of, say, the Perhia/Haitink recording. Still, this is the only Third Concerto on sacd for now.
