What a great program on this ample SACD! The three Sonatas for Piano and Cello by Bohuslav Martinu “are all works from his mature years that are among his most played. Related in form and style, they are different in their expressive climate,” states Harry Halbreich. Respectively, we hear the Sonata N°1 H.277 from 1939, the Sonata N°2 H.286 dating from 1941, and the Sonata N°3 H.340 from 1952. Then there is the piece “Malinconia” Op.20 for cello and piano by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, who had just lost his third daughter. The disc also proposes the Sonata for Cello and Piano by Olli Mustonen dating from 2006. This latter is here presented in its world première on disc. The duo Steven Isserlis and Olli Mustonen find the perfect harmony to defend these demanding scores where expression is essential in order to respect the individual style of each composer. And in a sound recording that is respectful of the instrumental tones, this SACD is nothing but a must.
