Here is an SACD which will lastingly thrill the ears of demanding music lovers. Devoted to the little-known composer Waldemar von Bausznern (1866-1931), who was a contemporary of Gustav Mahler, this first volume dedicated to his chamber music offers us the Octet in D minor for Piano, Three Violins, Flute, Clarinet, Cello and Double Bass; the Elegy in C minor for Violin and Piano; as well as the Serenade for Violin, Clarinet and Piano. It is thanks, most notably, to Waldemar von Bausznern that music classes became obligatory in high school. And, as Michael Wittmann states: “Thanks to his social engagement and his interest in both current German musical trends that looked towards the past and toward the future, he was ideally placed to administratively support the spectacular nominations of Franz Schreker, Arnold Schoenberg, Paul Hindemith, and also the founding of the Kroll Opera. Stylistically, Bausznern followed paths that were entirely personal, privileging the freer formal architecture he discovered in the representatives of the new German school. In his late works, he above all came close to a linear style which very often touched the limits of tonality by an excessive chromatic.” The young Berolina ensemble, founded in 2009, defends these pages with passion, conviction and rigor in a most vibrant approach wherein inspiration is in perfect osmosis with music. In short, here is an SACD that is not to be missed in order to discover a somewhat forgotten composer.
