This is fantastic performance of Tchaikovsky's much-loved Fifth Symphony. My first recording of this work was Valery Gergiev's powerful live recording with Wiener Philharmoniker (Philips) and I heard this last year in live concert at the Helsinki Music Centre (Manfred Honeck, conductor). Christian Lindberg tells his interesting booklet notes, that he heard this symphony, when he was only ten years old. And indeed - he loves this dramatic melancholic symphony: Artic Philharmonic Orchestra plays virtuosity, and BIS label's recording quality is terrific! First movement (13'10) is very good: the clarinet's quiet solo is performed very attractive, and the fast second theme is moving and fresh. The beautiful second movement (12'16) is very popular, and first horn's gentle thema sounds very warmly: this is wonderful music! The dramatic and frightening moments are breathtaking; orchestra's tone is excellent! The short third movement (6'02) is also very good, but it isn't very shining: just normal performance, no surprising tricks. The last, great finale (12'16) is the whole performance's most exciting part: Lindberg conducts powerfully and orchestra answers brilliantly. The triumphantly march is quick, but it isn't hurry. When the last four chords were over, I have to say, that this was outstanding performance! Bravo! Swan Lake Suite is nice bonus. Buy this, I like this very much!
