One can only imagine where this bans would have went had Duane Allman not died.

I am very impressed with Mofi's new sacd of Eat a peach. I have been listening to the original sacd release from about a decade ago through the years but I don't think I'll be returning to that disc any time soon such is the good job that Mofi has done. With Mofi its not always apparent if their new releases better the older ones. Billy Joel comes to mind. Other times there is an improvement as is the case of the new Dylan sacd's. They are better but not dramatically. In the case of this Allman Brothers sacd the improvement is very noticeable and somewhat easy to detect.

The original release was......as I have always suspected most likely a 24/96 pcm transfer. It was also compressed in the lower octaves with a very hard low end. I never understood why this was done. Even songs like Melissa were compressed where the acoustic guitar chords in the beginning have a hard edge. Oddly enough...Mountain Jam was not compressed and had to be cranked to get the best sound. Up until now it was my favorite version of this cut.

This new sacd is for the moist part pretty perfect. The first two tracks are a tad problematic. They can sound a tad dull and flat. They were recorded that way. after this however...COMMENCING WITH THE Third TRACK.IT GETS BETTER AND BETTER FROM THERE. Its obvious that there was no trickery done by Mofi with this new transfer. There is no goosing up or compression. No addition of treble. Mofi's tape head simply went to work and retrieved so much more information than other transfers.

As soon as Melissa started and the acoustic guitar chords sounded that natural, as the song simply bloomed naturally with nary any nasties......it was really thrilling.

Yes..these are older tapes. They do have a tone to them as all old tapes almost always have. Their is some crackly moments at the beginning of track two and some wear on the last track. But who cares??? The added details and the warmth and realism more than compensate.

Mountain Jam....what may be the greatest, certainly longest jam in recorded history. It owes a great debt to classic jazz and in particular Miles Davis. Allman studied the tonal structures and solo's of Davis and came up with a way to jam in southern rock that was very unique. As I mentioned the previous sacd contained my favorite version... until now. Mofi's tape machine captured a level of detail and energy....of live tonality that astounded me. Its a little dangerous in cranking this new version. Not because of compression but that there is so much going on.....the low end energy that your speakers will beg for mercy. I had to listen several times just to get the other version out of my head. This new version of Mountain Jam is fuller, deeper and richer. Its wall to wall sound. The sound stage is wider and better back to front information. Its almost like an assault to the senses.. Its simply awesome. The audience must have been overwhelmed hearing this. I can only imagine.
Blue Sky which sounded good previously sounds even better here. No compression.just tape information. This cut is recorded very well I must say. Even little Martha the beautiful acoustic guitar cut by Allman and Betts sounds so much fuller mow. Not as twangy.

All the live cuts sound so much better now. The latter studio cuts are so much more intelligible now as well....more cohesive. Mofi let the tapes do the talking. No trickery at all. Just Dsd doing its good thing. The low end is strong but natural. There is no annoying or contrived treble added. When its detected its very natural and non fatiguing. Every cut has more macro details. More like tape and less like Hi fi.

I highly recommend this new Mofi sacd of this classic Allman album. Mr. Loverde did a sterling job here.
This disc is not audiophile at all but it never needed to be. It sounds as good as its ever going to. It has a master tape sound and a very natural organic analog feel to the sound. Outstanding if your system can take it .that is.
Great job Mofi.

I already had one SACD of this iconic LP by the Allman Brothers, but SACDs are not that easy to come by and especially by your favorite band, the first I have was done by Mercury and is much more polished than this version, but Mofi really let's this recording shine without super compressing it, and This other reviewer here made me want to give this a listen, I was just going to send it back, because of finances, and he was right, the first tracks are a little hissy and rough, but you can here the dynamics of the music much better, and without the compression, you really hear the recording like a live show, Mountain Jam, their 35 minute jam sounds totally different, the drummers go nuts while the drum solo here is loud and a big part of the song. Barry Oakley's Bass is much more noticeable too. This SACD is done from the original tapes, the first SACD sounds like it was taking the original release and making a SACD from the original mix, because this is fresh, and really, it has different sounds on different parts. There is more life in the recording than the first SACD. Dickey and Duane really shine here with their guitar work. Sometimes songs sound faster than what you have been listening to for years. You hear stuff in the percussion that I never heard before. The other reviewer said this wasn't audiophile, I understand where He was coming from, but I am going to say that it is because what was done here by the MO FI engineer was make the music sound like it really sounded. Most SACDs are enhancements to make the music sound better, and add compression and polish. If you like the ABB, you need this.
