Performance:   Sonics:
This release is a reissue on SHM-SACD of the Universal SACD issued some seven or eight years ago and long out of print. I opted for the competing Bishop/Davis SACD at that time and have always been sorry that I did not get both. I prefer Bishop and Davis on the Schumann: Bishop's playing is, to me, an object lesson in how to play an early romantic work without losing sight of the fact that it is just a few years removed from the classical period. Lupu, while also very fine on the Schumann, gives one of the richest, warmest performances of the Grieg to be heard, and the sound is Decca analog at its finest--once again, rich and warm come to mind as descriptions, combined with clarity and vivid positioning of instuments in a convincing hall ambience. I never heard the original SACD; the new one is a very, very close match for the Decca LP (which was on the TAS list for years); and this issue is noticeably finer than any RBCD version of these performances I have heard, putting the performers in a convincing acoustic framework. The packaging, as with this entire SHM-SACD series, is wretched: too high by a quarter inch to fit conveniently on some shelves, and awkward and clumsy in the way the disc stores in the folder. I just don't get it; what can they be thinking? Oh well, a great SACD.
