This is one of the most controversial Miles Davis albums, because it started his funk-inspired period. It's a case of "love it or hate it", and I won't try to review the music here.

I waited very long before ordering this SACD, because I already had the remastered CD and thought this recording would not benefit much from SACD treatment. The recording relies heavily on multi-track mixing and overdubs. There is no soundstage as such, the instruments are all over the place. The recording quaility on not as good as on "Bitches Brew" or "Big Fun", which also contain many overdubs but not such a wild mix of sounds.

But compared to the CD version, the SACD is much more enjoyable because it sounds smoother and more transparent, making the thickets of sounds less fatigueing more easy to analyze.

Miles Davis beginners should start elsewhere, but fans of this session should definitely get the SACD. The Sony JSACDs are now OOP and are getting harder to find, so you should not hold off too long before ordering this and the other Miles JSACDs.

A good improvement over the standard CD which is a little harsh, but the source recording is still no winner. The music is excellent however and you can do no better than this version.
