It is most unfortunate that the Shm sacd program has come to a halt. They are very expensive to be sure but the majority of their releases are stellar and ground breaking.

This is a classic Art Pepper album from 1960. I own the original fantasy sacd release and its a very good one to be sure. But this newly remastered Shm Sacd trumps it in every single category.
The original sacd showcases a very good original recorded sound with good sound stage and dimension. But this new sacd is much better. The original sacd was created from the original master tapes while this new 2012 transfer was done from a secondary tape source. Yet the new disc sounds like a master tape transfer......sounding fresh and new, vibrant and the older disc sounds like a dub was used. Incredible but true.

The volume level must be increased somewhat high to get the best effect.....this is a trait usually reserved for the best Dsd sacd transfers. Once this is done just sit back and enjoy the great sound.

The music is swinging and mostly extroverted although there are several slower tracks. Pepper sought out the best musicians to play with and he has a great group here.

The sax of Art Pepper is captured somewhat dry with no reverb or echo. This comes from the original recording sessions. Whereas the first sacd pushed the sax and trumpet a little back in the mix and the drums were a little murky this newly remastered sacd is simply astounding in what it gives the listener. Jimmy Cobb's drums are rendered as real as can be imagined with impressive solo work that is very lifelike. The bass is warm and expressive and the sax and trumpet are better realized on this new disc as is the piano. It all works better on this new disc compared to the older one..

I recommend this new shm sacd with no reservations whatsoever. A great sounding disc. Play it really loud.
