One of the all time gems of Charles career is released by Mobile Fidelity on sacd. MOFI ALSO RELEASED ANOTHER Charles SACD several years ago and it was an abysmal sounding disc. Ray SOUNDED LIKE HE WAS RECORDED IN A COCOON. That sacd is dry and lifeless sounding.

This new sacd however is much better. But first a discussion on the tapes...which are mono. They are old to be sure and the original recording is not the greatest with horn instruments recorded ever so slightly harsh. Hey.......this is a recording from over 50 years ago. There are little limitations of the recorded sound. Also a slight tape wear issue that rears its ugly head ever so often but it is hardly noticeable.

The album features both fast and slow songs. The former with horns and orchestra by the great Quincy Jones and the latter with strings. I feel that the slower songs fare much better than the faster songs as the strident nature of the horn section does not come into play. This sacd has a good treble extension and some air which I love to hear. The previous disc had none of these qualities.

All this being said.this is actually a decent effort by Mofi and the sound is much, much better than I hoped for. The voice of Ray Charles is captured very nicely..full of textures and soul. It can get throaty as well and this should tell you that all in all........his voice is captured with good 3 dimensional force.

A solid release by Mofi with good sound all around. As I said....much better than I had hoped for.

Recommended.

I am a big fan of Ray Charles and after reading a lot of good comments about this SACD i decided to pick it up. I already have this album both on vinyl and RBCD and now on SACD. In sharp contrast to others I find this SACD loud and shrill...in my opinion the warmth is totally sucked out of this version. The horns sound distorted and too sometimes does Ray's voice!

The quieter numbers are better and play much better but still there are definite sound peaks.....

I would offer that my vinyl is superior by far to this SACD and do not recommend this disc to anyone..

Music is wonderful...the SACD is right off the grid........

Mofi missed on this one ....bummmer too cause I love the album
