Review by joheirba November 11, 2012 (4 of 5 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
Finally, one of my most preferred CD's available on SACD ! Do I need to say more ?

Compared to Michal Kanka, Jacqueline Du Pré's playing is more lyrical, somewhat slower. You can hear that she loves every note of this music. To me, there's more romantism within this version (see also my review of Michal Kanka's version), but without any exaggeration nor any negative connotation.

Now about the Sonics: this is a very purified digital remastering of analog source material. In my opinion, a lot of time and effort has been put into the filtering out of all analog noise and impurities. That's very positive. However, at certain places, this produces small digital artifacts - remainders of filtered out noises I guess - coming out of the tweeters. They are more disturbing when listening through my headphones. Also, the trebles seem somewhat on the sharp side to me, something quite strange at first for an SACD. However, when listening more carefully, one hears that this is not the same kind of typical harshness as heard on a CD. It's another kind of sharpness, more refined. At the positive side, I can hardly hear any analog noise on my headphones, and no analog noise at all when listening on my regular installation. The sound of the cello is very clear, profound, detailed, ... The background too is very clear and refined. The clavichord, by example, in the Monn concerto is simply brilliant !
