Give Evans credit. He wasn't shy about trying new things. This is probably why his music still sounds so fresh and vibrant long after he departed us. On this particular album Evans and his trio are joined by a symphony orchestra and the music is very good indeed. I need to make something clear. While there really is an orchestra here...Evans does not play in unison with them. Rather the Orchestra begins the track to lay down the feel and tone of the composition and then Evans plays with his trio. Later in the track Evans is joined by a string section to complete the track. If the band actually played with the orchestra simultaneously...this might make for a difficult listen.
The music is excellent throughout the whole album and I cant imagine any fans of Bill Evans disliking this sacd.
The sound is also very good all around. The orchestra is recorded with a full, rich and dense sound. At times I forget this is a jazz album because the classical music is so good. The recording of the orchestra really is awesome. The jazz portion with and without strings is also rendered very beautifully. Nice bass, delicate drumming and good piano tone. I cant really find fault with this sacd.
A very good Shm Sacd and highly recommended.
Play it loud.
