Well, this was my first Chesky SACD, and I was not sure what to expect. This is a compilation of show tunes played by an extremely competent orchestra. There is plenty of fun music here and it is obvious that the orchestra is enjoying themselves.

Now, I am not real sure of the audio quality here at all. The sound is lacking any real air or space and there is no sparkle to the sound. I got the immediate sense that this was done in some studio and after reading the technical information, my suspicions were confirmed that this WAS indeed the case. What is so strange is that the soundstage is considerably lower (and not in great way) than I am used to hearing.....in any type of music. I know that this is not serious classical music, but still, I get the impression of this music coming from either a dead orchestra pit, or, if I was sitting WAY up in a balcony looking down on the orchestra. This is not a terrible thing, just rather strange. Very un-DSD'ish indeed!!!

I can at least positively report that despite the strange ambiance (or lack of) does not interfere with the quality sounds the orchestra members are making, as at least the instruments sound like they are supposed to. I guess that I can say that this DSD recording sounds unlike any other DSD recording I own.

Approach this one with caution if you like loads of air, space, ambiance, etc.
