Performance:   Sonics:
In commenting on the recent SACD release of the Rostropovich/Giulini recording of the Dvorak Concerto, I indicated my strong preference for this one, and there is no point in repeating that all here. This is a grand, lush reading, with both soloist and conductor viewing the concerto as the ultimate Romantic expression of the genre. The sound is vintage analog, rich and dynamic, slightly better than DG's pretty good German-pressed LPs, although probably not an improvement on the clearer sound of the British-pressed LP version. If you prefer something tauter and less lush, there is the Mercury SACD of the great Starker/Dorati recording, and the recent Wispelwey/Fischer and Gueyras/Belohlavek releases are very fine, the former probably falling somewhere between Rostropovich and Starker stylistically, the latter providing a more intimate, almost chamber-orchestra view which grows on me more each time I hear it. The Rococo Variations here gets an equally fine, equally lush performance and good recording. With the earlier Piatigorsky/Munch and recent DuPre/Barenboim releases, both distinguished performances if not perfect recordings, there is certainly an embarrassment of riches when it comes to SACD versions of the Dvorak Cello Concerto.
