The real question regarding this Sabbath shm sacd is this.......................should Universal Japan released this disc at all given its sonic problems??

I think not.

The actual album is awesome. One of their very best in my opinion. Some critics were miffed that the group decided to be more creative and felt that they over reached a tad. I disagree. I think this disc proves their talent all the more. Although the music was still heavy it was also blended with blues and simple hard rock. There were also great changes to the usual guitar chord structure and at times during the course of the song there could be as much as three different riffs going on.
So as an album......this is top notch.

The recording is....... just dreadful and all over the place. Actually incompetent. Not only are there great volume discrepancies where a track will start off sounding so low and then by the end of the track mush louder but at times the low end has all but vanished. In short it is very difficult to really sit and enjoy this sacd because the listener is constantly jarred by the terrible recording. I dont blame the techs who mastered this shm sacd. Its the original recording.
And it begs the question again..should this have been released at all???
No!!! Not for the hefty price we paid. No way.

However..............there are two portions of this disc that are actually very impressive. Track 3 called Fluff was recorded very beautifully and if the whole disc sounded this good....I would be most happy and it would be a killer sonically. I still cant believe BLack sabbath recorded this instrumental. It is years in the future and it sounds like it belongs in a romantic modern movie.

The other impressive portion is track 6.....who are you. The synth opening is very, very impressive. Ofcourse once the vocals come in..well then the song collapses.

The majority of this disc sounds as if a heavy blanket has been placed over your speakers.

Shame on you Universal Japan for releasing this dud.

Not recommended for any price.

Hand is not raised to put less than four and a half stars. Noticeable only slightly reduced bass compared to the first two albums. As for the rest ... and enjoy the sound quality of the music.
