Fans of either the Nine Inch Nails or Linkin Park would feel right at home with "3" from Thumb. Frankly, I am not really a fan of rap-metal music. However, to their credit, Thumb tries to bring some suprising good melodies to a genre that usually does not have any (Linkin Park) and also offers some suprisingly upbeat lyrics (unlike Limp Bizkit).

This disc presents what you would expect. A loud and agressive use of all 6 channels. Lyrics primarily come from the center speaker, although several tracks place some vocals in the rear speakers. This style works well with this type of music. Soundstage is very wide and Bass is very strong here.

As for the music, some tracks work better than others. The opener, "Upside and Down". is very bouncy and very NIN like. "Youth" offers some of the best melodies on the disc. "Thumbtune" shows the power of multi-channel mixing. Other highlight tracks are "Break My Back" and "More". The weak tracks are the wanna-be Beastie Boys tracks, like "Down Like Me", "Migraine" and "Stupid". However, the strengths make this a worthy purchase, especially considering how few SACDs of this type of music currently exist.

One last note: This disc has an authoring error that causes it to hang right at the end. Not a big deal on a single disc player, but something to remember if you use a multi-disc player.
