Performance:   Sonics:
Again, this is one of the classics of the EMI catalogue. Either you consider it the finest recording of the Triple Concerto, or you think it is the equivalent of sending four battleships out to sink a rowboat. I tend towards the former view, but I can certainly see how anyone who sees the concerto as a concertante, almost chamber, work, would go the other way. You just have to listen and make up your own mind. The SACD is fuller and richer than the several previous RBCDs I compared it to, including an excellent Japanese HQCD release, but it does tend to emphasize the bass response of the hall--the Berlin Philharmonie, I believe--a bit too much. Certainly the original HMV and Electrola LPs, and the audiophile LP reissue, are still the best way to hear this recording.
