Performance:   Sonics:
I don't know why this hasn't generated more excitement. This is a fairly great SACD. Among the top 10 in my collection. The music has always been a touch 'bright'--mostly because of the style of the music, the instrumentation and the wide dynamic range of the recording, which even would make my finest moving coil cartridges jump out of the grooves. Huge dynamic swings, bright, midrange/trebly playing at time always made this an electrifying experience in the mode of the best post-Miles, post-Mahavishnu fusion. (The VU meters must have been pinned to distortion during most of the recording...even noticable on LP.) But the more noxius aspects of the brightness have been admirably handled and tamed on this SACD. Still, it is intense and challenging music from Weather Report, but at the same time this is among the most accessible of that group's albums. A little less avant garde than some of their material, it has aged (in my estimation) extremely well, even better than most of the fusion albums of Miles. The cleanness and precision of the recording is exemplary, especially the extraordinarily quiet 'black' backgrounds that allow the music to pop out of a silent background in an often heartstopping way. The remix is quite excellent; not simply a copy of the LP's mix, but to my mind superior. This is far more exciting and vital experience than my original (and subsequent re-master) LPs...and a huge quantum leap over any of the versions available on redbook. Highly recommended.

What a great CD! This album sounds awesome (given it's age) and even though it's stero "only" it has an incredible sound stage with the sound extending way way out beyond the edges of the speakers. Imaging is picture perfect to, with the performers well placed and solid. The performance is a classic: it's the one to get if you only get one. Lot's synth, sax, and Jaco, too. If you like fusion, or you think you might like fusion, this is the one to get... it's timeless.

stereo sonics: like on many records of the 70s the sound is a bit thin and sharp, lacks warmth
