Performance:   Sonics:
I just received this in the mail. It was pricey (as are every SHM-SACD), but with so little Keith Jarrett available in SACD, I bought it.I like Keith Jarrett very much, and have a lot of his music on the ECM label (all redbook). For the most part the ECM's are stunning sonically with a unique sound, presence and soundstage that can rival even a well done SACD. This SHM-SACD does not sound like an ECM at all. Jarrett is in the left speaker and bass and percussion occupy the right channel. This offers a different perpective to a Jarrett disc then what I am used to.I am not a huge fan of this style of recording but I know others like it.
Musically, it's early Jarrett (recorded at the age of 23 in 1968 at Shelly Manne's-Hole)with Charlie Haden instead of Gary Peacock, and Paul Motion in DeJohnette's chair. Great musicians and offers a different sound then the standards trio. You can see Jarrett's genius already at this young an age.If you do not care for the "moaning like a farm animal" that often is part of the Jarrett experience, it is fairly muted, only faintly showing up here and there.
Sonically and musically, this disc is very good. If you are a Jarrett fan I would recommend it.It is of historical significance. Those new to Jarrett, can get some amazing Jarrett on the ECM lable at a fraction of the price. For that reason, I would recommended the disc conditionally.
