Despite the silly title, which Finnish guitarist Petri Kumela explains in his notes, this is a stunning recording. I have not heard him play before, so I am thrilled to discover such a fine player. He has jaw-dropping technique, beautiful tone, and a huge dynamic range. The pieces are fabulous, too. At 16 minutes, the Sor Fantasia might outstay its welcome a bit, but it's a nice enough piece. I mainly bought the disc for Maw's "Music of Memory", one of the most challenging contemporary pieces in the guitar literature. A lot of the thematic material comes from one of Mendelssohn string quartets, which weaves in and out of the musical fabric. Petri doesn't flinch in the face of technical cruelties. His transcription of Bach's Chaconne is wonderful too, although purists might question his heavy use of ornaments. Lotta Wennäkoski's piece is more aggressively modern than Maw's with numerous percussive techniques. The opening Hagen is a lute transcription of a Locatelli piece, which Petri further transcribed for guitar--a tuneful, virtuosic opener, and the disc closes with the sublimely beautiful "Farewell" by John Dowland.

It was recorded in a very reverberant church, which adds a lot of ambiance but does not obscure details. A very fine SACD, indeed.
