Wow. This is a wonderful album from the late 60's. The organ of Jummy Smith with the awesome big band jazz of Lalo Schifrin. Mr. Schifrin is a famous film score composer having done the popular dirty harry movies as well as the amityville horror and Bullitt. But he was always known, and still is as a jazz master and a first rate arranger. It is very hard to sit still listeneing to this sacd. There is no compression as is almost always the case with these shm-sacd's. Once the volume is turned up the sacd snaps into focus. There is great jamming and rocking on this disc. The sound is wide and very open. Instruments are rendered very nicely. From starts to finish this disc is terrific. The organ is also dynamically recorded. I cant say its the greatest sacd ever made or recorded but I can say that the sound is terrifiic and the album a must have if you like energetic jazz. You will be grooving. Highly recommended.

Jimmy Smith: The Cat SHM SACD Stereo Only. Japanese re release 11-26-2014. I have been looking at this disc for months, unfamiliar with Jimmy Smith and certainly looking at this ugly album cover of a Cat, nothing was luring me towards a purchase. Rammiepie said he was going to get it on some thread awhile back but I just kept it in the back of my mind. My friend Brandon is a huge jazz fan, knows everything, songs, albums, artists, times,etc. I said to him awhile back who is this Jimmy Smith guy and he blasted me with the knowledge of one of the best Hammond B-E organists of all time. I love organ jazz, probably better than horn jazz. Performance: BAM, BAM, BOOM, right off the bat, huge Big Band sound in your face. As Analogue's good review states the Big Band sound comes from Lalo Schifrin. This an original 1964 recording with 20 musicians which is quite impressive. Every track of course has the big organ sound of Smith. Very short performance 32:44, it starts and then it's over. Stereo Sonics: Well, big, would be a good word. Lots of stuff going on at all times, but from a sonic point of view, all the individual parts come through great. Nothing gets drowned out, you can hear all of the rhythm section. For instance easily can hear strumming of rhythm guitar, bass drum, snare, and cymbals resonate beautifully. Sometimes the big sound when it all blares together can be a little over modulated, and can be too bright at times. But these 1964 tapes making to shm sacd is pretty good in itself. Packaging: Plastic jewel case with square corners. Green label disc. Mini paper booklet that is half Japanese and half English. Another photo of a Cat, can you believe it and a photo of Jimmy Smith and another of Lalo Schifrin. Sparse liner, tack and recording notes. Well, I finally bought the disc with the ugly cat cover and I can now say I am glad I did, not for the cover but for the talent of Jimmy Smith.
