I did not want to take a chance on this disc as I heard from some sources that the recording is somewhat sub-par. I then read another review thart this was a superb shm-sacd that competed with the vinyl edition. I took a chance and as it turns out I need'nt have worried. This is a gorgeous shm-sacd.

This is a live recording made for a radio broadcast in Europe. The Bill Evans trio play very well and the album on a musical leval is inspired and superb.
In the negative reviews I was concerned that the piano was not captured well and that there were no micro- dynamics to be heard. There may be some very mild limitations on this recording but all will be well if the volume is increased.
The audience clapping, the wonderful textures of the instruments..even the voice of the announcer at the beginning is conveyed wonderfully on this shm-sacd. The more forceful the musicians play the more information is absorbed on the tapes and thats when this disc really starts cooking. I have heard the bass strings slapping on the fret before but on this disc the slapping is very pronounced. Like wise the piano is fairly deep and rounded but the drums and all of its nuances are rendered perfectly here. The bass..toms but especially the cymbals sparkle beautifully.

On track four there is a drum solo that is sonically amazing to me and the thunder of the drums are captured perfectly. It was jaw dropping to say the least. Most of the drumming is on the simple side but alot of the playing is busier and more dynamic that other earlier Evans albums. When the drum playing and it's textured are captured well the sound is truly phenomenal.

For those who worried that the sound of Evnas piano is not up to snuff....listen to track 5 and 10 which is Evans playing alone at the piano. The recording is excellent and dynamic.

There is great presence and good sound stage on this disc. The sound is very analogue and open and totally non digital. Great atmosphere. Like all the great sounding shm sacd discs this one sounds like tape.

Although the Riverside shm-sacd recording is better in a "you are there" sense this disc is still amazing and more intimate. And worth the money spent on it.

Play it loud and be amazed.
