Performance:   Sonics:
Ravel's colorful ballet "Daphnis and Chloé" is absolutely a masterpiece. It shows masterfully the composer's orchestration skills.
Anyway, this disc is my first SACD impression. I had Jun Märkl's budget price approach with the Lyon Philharmonic Orchestra (Naxos).
The recording's huge dynamic range wasn't surprise to me. Gergiev's earlier "French disc" for the same label - Debussy: La Mer (The Sea), The Afternoon of the Faun, Jeux - contained also an crystal clear surround sound. The engineering team of the LSO Live - Jonathan Stokes, Neil Hutchinson and James Mallison - has done again an impressive work at the Barbican Hall. The concert hall's dry acoustic is world famous - for example Sir Simon Rattle said that he doesn't like it. Happily the surround sound is here realistic and warmth.
The performance is also very good. Gergiev finds many new things from the score. London Symphony Orchestra follows closely its principal conductor. For example the Second Act's First Scene - the off-stage choir - is simply thrilling experience here.
Highly recommended SACD for all music lovers!
Results:
• Performance: ****1/2 (Excellent, but Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra's recording (BIS) is better - sometimes the powerful moments are too weak here)
• Recording: ****1/2 (Excellent)
• Packaging: **** (Good: There isn't a Super Jewel Case)
