Whilst this is an interesting disc the two main symphonies shown on the front cover are reconstructions of his 5th and 7th piano sonatas by Bernhard Wulff and not as authentic as you would be led to believe.The Capriccio CD only version of the 2nd symphony completly omits this reconstruction fact.The Glossa booklet is more accurate in its description "A musical portrait"
The other two genuine Ullman works on the disc The broken Jug overture and Don Quixote dances the Fandango are mentioned on the rear.
After reference to Wikpedia and the booklet provided with the cardboard case digipack it seems Ullmanns life story, born 1898 on what is now the Czech/Polish border and death in a Nazi concentration camp 1944 would be very interesting.Purchasing this disc on the basis of these notes ,plus a quick listen to the samples and comments about a Mahlerlike symphony with touches of Richard Strauss seems now to me a fair exaggeration.
His tuition with Schoenberg and Zemlinsky do have some influences on the original pieces and they seemed the easiest to enjoy.It came as no suprise to read that the orchestrator of the symphonies was indeed a typanist.I suggest you read between the lines.
Whilst Ive no doubt some future site reviewer will go into raptures and greater detail ie the long winded finish of so called symphony 2 is a Jewiish folksong variation but I found this studio recording just above CD level in quality and at a lowish level.String tone seemed at times little on the thin side compared with top quality recordings.Stereo presentation was slightly laid back even a little diffuse? at times.The finale eventually does comes to life.
So, just about a worthy addition to the world of sacd issues,some nice melodies but hardly ones you will go away whistling.
Less than an hours music.
