Amen, says I.
This is a great recording and starting set of performances; I just wish Analogue Productions would resurrect more classical like this! There is much more great Reader's Digest/Living Stereo material from Wilky waiting in the vaults...
The impact of the two Mussourgsky pieces is, indeed, sledge-hammer like. And the great Kenneth Wilkinson graces the proceedings with vivid, dynamic and muscular sound which perfectly matches the fiery performances.
The 'Pictures' and 'Night on a bare mountain' is, of course, a classic pairing which has been graced by several classic recordings over the years. I have discussed these in greater length elsewhere (under the Szell reading of 'Pictures').
Suffice it to say that - for mainstream sound and performance - the Reiner on Living Stereo is hard to beat, and belongs in anyone's classical collection. If natural, mid-hall sound is your objective, the Slatkin on MoFi is startlingly fine but - as noted above - the performance is pretty conventional.
If you fancy a walk on the wild side, however, this Analogue Production is hard to beat. Actually, I would find it hard to part with any of these three very different but essential recordings. They're that good.
