Neo Classical Stravinsky done right...

A real game of two halves, this one. I bought this SACD primarily for the Pulcinella. And that is, indeed, the piece I will go back to again and again.

This offers extremely good chamber ensemble and vivid playing, although I could wish for a tad more earthiness at times. The recording of this piece, however, is truly exceptional. It is astonishingly transparent (SACD stereo layer) and coherent, with great staging and focus. It rather reminds me of the sort of definitive analogue sound that Prof Johnson achieved for Reference Recordings in the 'good old days'. Seriously, it really is that good. Much kudos to Philip Hobbs, Finesplice and Linn.

And the flip side? Truly, I just don't get Apollon. I find it neo classical Stravinsky at his most po-faced, enigmatic and elusive. Gee, I have to say this, but I actually find it quite a boring piece. I'm obviously missing something, here. Fabulous string sound, again, but still overall a turgid experience.

So, 5 stars for the Pulcinella and 3 for the Apollon. Hence 4 stars overall. And don't even think of the RBCD layer.
