A stereo review and comparrison with the two other main Khachaturian discs.
Once again shortish measure at 55 minutes.The differences between sacds of the same works is quite large.
Firstly is seems Ara Malikian a Lebonese with Armenian roots is probably more suited to the ethnic
origins of the Violin Concerto more so than the excellent but different Fischer.
I personally did not find that version particulaly Russian despite Petantones erroneous title.
The first thing you notice is a more earthy attack on a violin that seems somehow fuller in tone than the strad on Pentatone.Im note sure I agree with Pollys assesment of the playing and this version certainly brings out more of the root melodies .
Comparison shows timing of the first two movements as almost identical.The final movement shows Miss Fisher 32 seconds quicker and closer to the original dedication to Oistrakh.Ironically the two male versions sound the closest?
Orchestrally (closer and smaller on this version)Again the same difference is there.Interestingly they are based in the deep south west of Spain.
Listen closely and the instruments and tunes are even clearer in seperation than the other version.
I believe This is a very high PCM quality recording but it would be difficult not to like it.Maybe a tad close up.This is far more noticable in the Masquerade Suite? which includes just two extra pieces against the Membran disc.
This version instantly shows a much more balletic side to the music and individual phrasing of the tunes makes it very Tchaikovsky sounding.The violinist returns for the Nocturne and once again no attempt at virtusity. The final galup being much more fun and like Shostakovitch at his best.These are compliments.I guess an orchestra less than half the size of the RPOs version helps here.The recording quality is also a fair step up.
So overall not the perfect AK disc,certainly more authentic in some areas.Question is whether like me you want a different version of the concerto which has been described as repetitive in violinists quarters.IMO more musical.
No problems if you want a sonic delight with a digipak booklet,excellent liner notes in Spanish & English and a fiddly drop in disc holder.
